The relation between the topography and deep structure of large-diameter meteorite craters in investigated by examining characteristics of large terrestrial meteorite craters and astroblemes. The rock complexes observed in these craters are described, including pedestal, coptogenic (impact-related), filler, overlapping, and injectional complexes. It is shown that each of these complexes has its own internal structure and that differences between simple cup-shaped craters and more complex craters with central or annular upthrusts are due to differences in their deep structure. Seven major morphological types are distinguished on the basis of crater diameter. It is concluded that modifications of transitional craters and the rocks at their bases are associated mainly with the motion of target material ahead of the impact shock front and also with the action of the reflected shock wave.
