On the basis of expressions relating the 5577 A emission intensity to the oxygen atom density corresponding to the Chapman mechanism or the Barth mechanism of O(1S) production in the lower thermosphere, combined with a previously derived reaction rate coefficient for the overall O(1S)-producing reaction, aeronomic 5577 A intensities and O(3P) intensities were compared in order to determine which of the two mechanisms, the Chapman or the Barth one, is valid. It is shown that the Barth mechanism gives the more satisfactory explanation of the airglow data. Moreover, there is a good chance that the intermediate excited O2 state, as required by the Barth mechanism, which transfers its energy to O(3P), is the A 3(Sigma u +) state.
