The loss of energy by energetic electrons injected into a weakly ionized argon gas is calculated with the aid of suitably chosen cross sections for electron impact excitation and ionization of argon. On the basis of a derived dependence of energy loss on electron energy, equilibrium velocity distributions for 54.5 eV electrons and the number of excitations to various levels of argon as a function of electron energy up to 200 eV were calculated for different values of the fractional ionization up to 0.01. The excitations give rise to numerous visible emission lines and some in the extreme UV.
