Photographic photometry on the V, I system has been obtained for giant stars in the metal-rich globular clusters NGC 5927, 6171, 6352, 6356, 6388, 6522, 6528, 6712, and 6723. These data yield new parameters to describe the giant branch, namely the color of the red variables, and the magnitude difference between the horizontal branch and the highest point on the giant branch. These parameters are correlated with the metal content, in the sense that the redder the red variables and the fainter the giant branch, the higher the metal content. A comparison is made between the cluster giant branches and those of open clusters, groups and field stars of the old disk population. Color-magnitude diagrams are presented.
