The exponential decay over the last 706 days of the 1612 MHz maser in IRAS 18455+0448 IRAS 18455+0448 points to a PPN status for the star, and heralds its imminent death as an OH/IR star. PPN also show us that the immediate precursors of OH/IR stars are mimics: the first emergence of 1612 MHz masers from a mimic's shell then flags its birth as an OH/IR star. Prototype examples of recent births are IRAS 19566+3423 IRAS 19566+3423 and V1511 Cyg.
