Data from two of the Great Observatories are combined to investigate star formation rate diagnostics in the infrared. Images of nearby galaxies from Spitzer (obtained as part of the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey, or SINGS) at 8~μm and 24~μm are combined with HST/NICMOS images in the Paschenα (Paα) emission line at 1.8756~μm, to assess the regime of applicability of monochromatic mid-infrared luminosities as star formation rate indicators. The analysis targets star forming regions/complexes inside the galaxies; applicability to whole galaxies is also discussed. The interest in monochromatic mid-infrared star formation rate diagnostics is sparked by their potential application to intermediate-high redshift galaxies.
