Results are presented for a more accurate computer-aided determination of the Doppler velocities measured by the Mars 6 descent module during its penetration of the Martian atmosphere. The signal-acquisition and data-processing procedures employed are described. The measured Doppler velocities are converted directly to atmospheric parameters for the height region between 12 and 93 km, specifically local values of mass density and atmospheric pressure and temperature profiles. The total Mars 6 data set is subjected to a combined statistical analysis in order to obtain more exact values for the reference-surface temperature, the pressure near the surface, the tropopause height, the temperature of the isothermal atmosphere above that height, the mean wind speed at heights of 0 to 10 km, and the distance from the reference surface to the center of mass. The best set of results is shown to be in good agreement with Mariner 9 observations, and a local model of the atmosphere is proposed which is characterized by a near-surface temperature of 246 K, a near-surface pressure of 5.45 mbar, a mass density of 0.0117 kg/cu m, a tropopause height of 33.3 km, a temperature of 149 K above that height, and a reference radius of 3389 km.
