The URCA process in convective degenerate carbon cores is investigated. This process has recently been considered as a stabilizing mechanism of the carbon ignition. It is found that beta decay and electron capture have only very small effects on the motion of individual convective blobs. Global analysis of the whole convective core shows that a steady-state hydrostatic carbon-burning phase is impossible. Consequently, the ability of convectively driven URCA to prevent carbon detonation in evolved cores of stars of about 4 to 8 solar masses is questioned.
