An attempt is made to present a method that can be used to compute the evolution of density fluctuations and velocity fields through the era of cosmological recombination. Results are reviewed for a previous analysis conducted by linearizing the equations of motion for matter and radiation, and a dispersion relation is derived which allows the evolution of any kind of density fluctuation or velocity field to be treated provided a certain set of conditions is satisfied. The method is applied to follow the evolution of initially adiabatic fluctuations through decoupling, and some resulting peculiarities are examined. It is concluded that primeval adiabatic fluctuations cannot form galaxies directly.
