The effect of finite Larmor radius on the stability of streaming anisotropic plasma jets immersed in a uniform magnetic field and enveloped by a nonconducting compressible gas is investigated with the aid of Chew-Goldberger-Low (1956) equations (CGL equations). The problem is posed in a plane geometry (plasma contained in a slab, streams parallel to confining walls) and in a cylindrical geometry. Solutions are obtained for perturbations in the surrounding gas, boundary conditions at the plasma gas interface are formulated, and dispersion relations are discussed analytically for two limiting situations (density ratio of plasma jet and external gas either very large or very small). A destabilizing effect of the Larmor radius is noted. The relevance of streaming plasma studies to the solar wind, coronal streamers, plasma gun performance, and spiral arms of galaxies is noted.
