The height variation of nonthermal velocities is determined for the sun and Arcturus by means of Goldberg's (1958) method. Close line pairs from the same multiplet are used so that source-function equality can be assumed. By comparing the two lines at the same intensity level, the total broadening velocity is derived. A standard model atmosphere is then used to determine the small-scale nonthermal part of the total broadening velocity and the corresponding height. The resulting height-variation curves are found to be very similar for the sun and Arcturus, showing a decline in the lower photosphere and a rise in the chromosphere.
