Hartle and Hawking (1972) have pointed out that the Papapetrou-Einstein static solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations represent an arbitrary number of nonrotating black holes, each with its charge equal to its mass at rest in neutral equilibrium. Hartle and Hawking conjectured that such an equilibrium of charged black holes is possible only in this limiting case. This paper confirms this conjecture for nonrotating black holes placed along a line, the system being axisymmetric.
