A criterion is obtained for the applicability of the mass-point model to analyses of encounters between nonpoint bodies. If a cluster is populous enough, its dynamical evolution may in fact be treated in terms of this simplified model. In some clusters of galaxies the time scale required for the nonpoint character of the galaxies to exert a substantial influence on the dynamics is comparable with their age.
