This work adds the non-LTE treatment for molecules to the current models of M dwarf atmospheres and investigates the spectral behavior of low metallicity M dwarfs. M dwarf atmospheres have low electron densities and a radiation field that is far from a black body. This can make the assumption of statistical equilibrium invalid. Therefore, it is necessary to treat the most important opacity sources of M dwarfs i.e. the molecules, in non-LTE. This is done by using the so called "super level formalism". This method was successfully applied on carbon monoxide which shows deviations from LTE for low kinetic temperatures. The investigation of M dwarfs of different metallicities, i.e. from M dwarfs to M subdwarfs, provides the possibility to analyze the behavior of TiO and CaH, which are the most important absorbers in M dwarfs and M subdwarfs, respectively. The observed stars have been analyzed with the help of model atmospheres and their effective temperatures and metallicities have been determined.
