The profiles of the permitted lines in the spectra of Seyfert galaxies may be asymmetric because of self-absorption in the envelope. In this event the gas-filling factor can be estimated directly, and if the velocity field can be determined, one can gain information on how the filling factor, ionization rate, and gas density vary along the radius of the envelope. The filling factor is estimated for the Seyfert galaxies NGC 4151 and NGC 3516. A simple method is suggested for establishing the velocity field of the gas in a Seyfert nucleus.
