Results are reported for X-ray microprobe and geochemical analyses of tiny pyrrhotine and troilite spherules from impact glasses in the Popigay meteorite crater (located in northern Siberia). The peripheral parts of the spherules are found to be nickel-enriched by up to 12%, and a taenite inclusion was noticed in one case. Native nickel was observed in the form of a thin vein in a quartz clast. Geochemical analysis also showed that the impactites contained enhanced amounts of nickel relative to the parent rocks. It is proposed that the extraterrestrial object which formed the Popigay astrobleme is the source of the extra nickel.
