The paper discusses data collected by Pioneer 7 on the internal structure of the neutral sheet in the geomagnetic tail at a distance of about 1000 earth radii. Deviations from the usual simplified one-dimensional model are expected to have a notable effect on the stability of the neutral sheet. The observations confirm that there is a plasma velocity shear in the distant tail with a clear maximum at the neutral sheet. The enhanced z-component values at some x reversals suggest that field lines are interconnected across the neutral sheet.
