Recent UV imaging of nearby galaxies has revealed many examples of compact sources with unusually high ultraviolet luminosities. Theses sources appear to be young, massive star clusters, and to represent an extreme mode of star formation in contrast to the more common OB associations which power giant HII regions. We propose to obtain long- slit CCD spectra ((lambda)(lambda) 3800-7500 Å) of 2-3 luminous clusters in each of 7 host galaxies. Our primary goals are to determine the intrinsic luminosities, inferred masses, ages, and the constituent stellar populations of these sources. We have carefully selected objects based on their observed intensity, compact nature, and low line- of-sight extinction. The proposed observations will provide new information on the spectral energy distribution of young, compact clusters. In particular, the derived age distribution of the sources will provide further insight on their putative identification as young globular clusters.
