We intend to image the outskirts of the five dwarf spheroidal galaxies observerable from Kitt Peak using a variant of the Washington photometry system that allows us to identify individual red giant stars with only three filters. When used in conjunction with the Mosaic CCD array on the Mayall 4-m, this technique can survey unprecedentedly large areas around the dSph galaxies relatively easily. Our goal is to detect debris stripped from these galaxies by the tidal action of the Milky Way's gravity. In contrast to other studies, this survey will identify associated giant stars directly, not statistically, and so will (1) be essentially free of contamination by foreground Galactic stars and background galaxies, (2) be viable to arbitrarily low stellar densities, and (3) provide relatively clean catalogues of bona fide tidal giants bright enough for radial velocities to be obtained with the 4-m. The data from our survey will be used to determine the interaction between the Milky Way and its satellite galaxies, refine the orbits of the galaxies and provide a check on our on-going proper motion study of the satellite galaxies.
