A correlation between the presence of sodium surrounding Io and Io-related Jovian decametric bursts has been found. This suggests that sodium acts as a conductive mechanism for a potential difference across Io's diameter as it crosses Jovian magnetic field lines. It also removes the need for a low surface resistance to produce the decametric noise bursts.
