We propose to use narrow-band near-IR imaging of redshifted H(alpha) to identify star-forming galaxies and proto-galaxy fragments associated with a high redshift peak in the galaxy distribution of the Hubble Deep Field. We have already identified two galaxies in this peak at z=2.00 by means of their H(alpha) emission using CRSP. We will also survey a similar structure at z=2.478 associated with damped Ly(alpha) quasar absorber. Many galaxies have been identified at high redshift in the last two years, contributing to a new picture of how large galaxies such as the Milky Way were assembled, interpreted in the context of a new generation of computer simulations. One interpretation of the data and models so far is that large galaxies collapse out of several star-forming fragments. Here we will use IRIM to map a very large comoving volume to test this picture.
