The Nearby Star Catalog is grossly incomplete for the coolest stars. To remedy this, we have used the 2MASS and POSS2 surveys to select ultracool M dwarfs that apparently lie within 25 parsecs. Spectroscopy is needed to confirm the spectral type of these stars. This sample will help complete the nearby star luminosity function, the basis of estimates of the stellar mass function. Additional nearby stars will enable many astronomical studies which gain from high resolution, such as the search for brown dwarf and planet companions.
