We propose deep 5-color (UBVRI) 4-m imaging and galaxy spectroscopy in a unique region of the sky that contains a group of five bright QSOs. The various QSO separations range from ~ 0.9 arcmin to 7.9 arcmin. The Ly(alpha) forest at z~0.3-0.9 has been observed in four of the five QSOs with HST-FOS (in one we encountered Lyman limit absorption). The resulting line lists provide fundamental constraints on Ly(alpha) forest absorber sizes and clustering. Limited WFPC2 observations were also obtained and have permitted morphological classifications for some foreground galaxies. The deep 5-color imaging will allow us to identify and measure the colors and impact parameters of luminous foreground galaxies. We will reach R > 25, which will allow us to catalog objects and determine photometric redshifts for galaxies as faint as ~ 0.1L^* to z~0.9 (or ~ 0.006L^* at z~0.3). The multi-slit spectroscopy will provide direct redshift information on the more luminous foreground galaxies. Recent results indicate that at least some low-redshift Ly(alpha) forest absorbers are related to luminous galaxies with L > 0.2L^*, so our proposed survey should be very successful at investigating the extent and nature of this relationship.
