The effective recombination coefficient of the plasma in the E-region decreases with increasing electron temperature. Therefore the heating of this region by intense short-wave radio emission should be accompanied by an increase of electron density. This paper describes an experiment that confirmed this hypothesis; radio waves with a frequency of 4.6 MHz and an effective power of 15 MW were used to produce the heating. Some possible applications of the observed effect are discussed.
