An accurate measure of the star formation rate (SFR) density of the local universe is crucial for our understanding of galaxy evolution and formation. We propose to obtain follow-up spectra for candidate emission-line galaxies (ELGs) from the KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS). Our target objects are selected from an objective-prism survey utilizing the Burrell Schmidt. We use H(alpha) emission as an indicator of galaxian activity and are finding ~ 16.6 ELG candidates per field. Obtaining higher dispersion spectra of this sample will allow us to place strong constraints on the SFR density of the local universe. In addition, these spectra will allow us to quantify the selection function and completeness of our survey as well as investigate several other scientific problems, such as: large-scale structure and luminosity segregation; environmental effects on galaxian activity; chemical abundances; and the nature of the faint blue galaxy population.
