The origins of dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies are still a mystery. It is well established that dE galaxies are poor in gas and stellar metals, indicating that gas was lost rather then exhausted by internal star formation. How and when this happened, and what processes led to the production of non-rotating, dynamically `hot' spheroidal galaxies of amazingly low stellar densities are unclear. An important clue to the nature of dEs comes from their location in populous regions, near giant galaxies and especially in rich clusters of galaxies, leading to the suspicion that dEs could be dwarf disk galaxies that have been modified by interactions. We request use of the 4-m Mayall Telescope for spectroscopy of dE and dS0 galaxies in a variety of environments to measure redshifts of dE/dS0 candidates to locate them in space and determine if they really are dwarfs. This is a key step in culling samples of nearby early-type dwarfs for further study in comparison with cluster dEs. We will also measure internal kinematics (rotation speeds) of a few brighter Virgo cluster early-type dwarfs and related objects. This component of our program aims to test models where external perturbations convert small rotating disk galaxies infalling into clusters into non-rotating dE systems.
