We discuss the possibility to detect and perform low resolution spectroscopy of giant hot extra solar planets using the IR instruments of the VLTI. The direct detection is difficult because of the very high luminosity ratio between the planet and its star (10-4 at best), but Differential Interferometry (DI) can achieve this sensitivity by comparing the fringe phases simultaneously beween different spectral channels. DI is not affected by the usually dominant achromatic biases, and can potentially perform direct observation of several known ESP systems with a low spectral resolution. We discuss the instrumental and atmospheric chromatic effects which need to be minimized and/or calibrated to achieve this goal.
