I will review: 1. The characteristics of planetary systems for which high angular resolution is required. 2. The implications for the specifications of "optical architectures" (angular resolution, spectral range and resolution, dynamics etc). I will emphasize the "thresholds" above which new perspectives are open (e.g. from giant to Earth-like planets). 3. The different architectures proposed for Darwin, TPF and their possible precursors.
