I will discuss new results on galaxy clusters obtained with the X-ray observatory XMM. The exceptional sensitivity of XMM, associated with its spectro-imaging capabilities, allows us to map the temperature structure of the intra-cluster medium with unprecedented accuracy. These data provide new information on the physics of merger events and cosmological structure formation, as well as on cluster dark matter content. At smaller scales, high-resolution spectroscopy reveals a new vision of the core of clusters of galaxies, in particular of the cooling central gas. I will also present the first results on very distant clusters, important cosmological probes and summarize current planned cluster surveys.
