A method of solution is presented for the equation of state of matter in the atmospheres of late-type stars. The method is applied to existing grids of LTE model atmospheres for cool stars in order to determine the partial pressures of atoms and ions and to investigate physical conditions at the effective formation depths for absorption lines of various atoms and ions. It is found that: (1) variations in heavy-element abundances scarcely affect the atmospheric structure of late-type stars, especially giants; (2) differences in atmospheric structure alter the concentrations of atoms and ions at the effective formation depths; and (3) all elements may be divided into two groups on the basis of the variation of the partial pressures of neutral atoms with effective temperature.
