We shall first review particle acceleration in supernova remnants and cosmic-ray propagation in the Galaxy. Then we shall list the main arguments in favour and against the "standard model" identifying supernova remnants as the sources of the cosmic rays up to the change of slope of their energy distribution (the so-called "knee"), both from the observational and theoretical points of view. We shall then conclude by justifying the serious doubts that recent developments cast on the standard model.
