I will give a critical assessment of the observational determination of the cosmic SFR history at z > 1 from UV/IR/submm deep fields. It turns out that the UV extinction of star forming high-z galaxies is high and induces large corrections. The hybrid (N-body + semi-analytic) implementation of hierarchical galaxy formation predicts the overall statistical properties of high-z galaxies in the UV and IR/submm. The observational facilities in forthcoming years should offer exciting opportunities to understand the high-z galaxy and star formation histories.
