The purpose of this proposal is to obtain the first accurate luminosity and mass functions for a complete sample of 2MASS selected candidates in the South Galactic Cap. We propose to obtain R and I photometry with the 1.5m to complement JHK from 2MASS for accurate photometric parallaxes. One night of 4m spectrophotometry is requested following the 1.5m time to verify the luminosity estimates, using the spectral classification system developed by Kirkpatrick.
