Until a very recent period, supernovae seemed to be the most violent events of the Universe after the Big-bang, liberating in a few seconds 1051 ergs of kinetic energy and more than 1053 ergs in neutrinos (in the case of type II supernovae). Since 1997, thanks to the observations from the BeppoSAX satellite, optical counterparts of gamma-ray bursts (GRB) have been discovered, which allowed, in about 20 cases, the measurement of the redshift of the source. The energy radiated in gamma-rays has thus been determined and the resulting values are between 1051 and 1054 ergs! The GRB could thus dethrone the supernovae, unless they do not radiate isotropicly: to obtain the actual energy liberated it is necessary to take into account a ``beaming' ' factor, unfortunately very badly known. It could in addition exist a close relation between supernovae and GRB. For example, a GRB observed by BeppoSAX seems to be associated to a supernova of type Ic, corresponding to the explosion of a Wolf-Rayet star. Moreover, the optical counterpart of certain GRB shows, after a month or so, a ``bump'' which it is tempting to interpretre as a supernova explosion contemporary to the GRB. After a short reminder of the principal properties of supernovae and GRB, I will discuss the indices that allow to bring closer these two phenomena, while insisting on the many remaining uncertainties.
