Since 1997 a large population of very low mass stars and browns dwarfs has been identified in the field. The DENIS survey made several major contributions to this fast progress, including: the discovery of one of the first two field brown dwarfs, (2) the proposition and definition of the L spectral class, and the determination of their temperature scale, (3) the discovery of very close solar neighbourhood stars. Here we present the latest DENIS results in this field, with an emphasis on the definition of large L dwarfs samples and their use for stellar and brown dwarfs population studies.
