The Canada-France-Hawaii telescope (CFHT), brought into service in 1979, has just celebrated its 21st anniversary. To adapt to the arrival of large 8-10m class telescopes, the scientific council of the telescope, the SAC, has sent a call to the users community, soliciting proposals for a replacement, with the aim to build a new world-class telescope before the end of the decade. We present the French study to design a 16-25m telescope. A fast start in its design and construction may allow this telescope to be the first of its generation. It will also be used as bank of test for new technologies for the future giant telescopes, like the adaptive structures or the use of micro-optical components.
