It has been shown elsewhere by the author that certain models of galactic bars have the structures of uniformly rotating polytropes. This paper is devoted to the study of the nonaxisymmetric configurations of a uniformly rotating polytrope. The nonaxisymmetric configurations occur only for values of the polytropic index less than 0.808 according to James. An analytic method, valid for small values of the polytropic index, is formulated for the approximate solution of the governing equations. Sequences of axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric configurations are constructed and delineated. It is shown how centrifugal effects restrict the occurrence of nonaxisymmetric configurations to cases in which the polytropic index is small.
