The spectral and photometric features of stars with anomalously large
Balmer jumps are discussed. It is found that the majority of such
objects known to the author are classified as shell stars. Analysis of
observational facts indicates that in the investigated shell stars the
gas envelopes are strongly opaque in the Balmer continuum.
