It is shown that the ratio NR/NWR of the numbers of red supergiants to the number of WR stars varies very strongly with galactocentric distance, by a factor of about 90 between zones located at 7-9 kpc and 11-13 kpc from the galactic center. However, the ratio of the sum of the numbers of red supergiants and WR stars to that of blue supergiants, (NR+NWR)/NB, remains almost constant with galactocentric distance. A relation, also satisfied by the LMC and SMC, is obtained between the NR/NWR ratio and the metal content Z.
We suggest that the strong gradients in NR/NWR result from the effects of the abundance of heavy ts on the rate of mass loss, which in turn strongly influences the relative duration of the red supergiant and WR phases.
