A method is proposed for detecting linear polarization in solar radio bursts. According to this method, a linear component must appear in the dynamic spectra of a burst recorded with a linearly polarized antenna. Observations are then made of Faraday fringes due to rotation of the plane of polarization in the corona or the earth's ionosphere or of irregular amplitude fine structures in the spectra. The sensitivity of this method is analyzed and found to depend on spectrographic resolution as well as the scale of 'organization' of polarization in the (f,t) plane. Observations of several type III bursts are discussed, and it is noted that no evidence of linear polarization was detected for these bursts. This result is shown to contradict those of previous papers and is attributed to instrument effects on fixed-frequency polarimeters.
