The effect of variability in the number of absorbing TiO molecules on the B light curves of cool stars is estimated quantitatively by using the dependence of (U-B) color index on electron temperature. Cross sections for absorption in the alpha band system of TiO are computed on the basis of an approximate model for overlapping lines, and the variation of the number of TiO molecules as a function of spectral subtype is examined. It is shown that the number of particles above 1 sq cm of photosphere rises sharply with a transition from type M2 to M8. The diminished brightness of M stars in the B band is attributed to a marked growth of the reversing layer.
