An analysis of a star assumed to have burst out of its Schwarzschild barrier indicates that such an event is not possible. For the initial stages of explosion, the star is modeled as a shell structure consisting of outward-moving photons; the effect of this exploding shell on vacuum fluctuation modes is analyzed through arguments similar to those developed by Gerlach (1976) for the case of an incipient black hole. The analysis suggests the existence of an energy transfer process which would quickly damp the expansion.
