OSO-7 and ground-based observations of Her X-1 have revealed an X-ray emission line with an energy of 53 keV. The most likely explanation for the emission is considered to be non-relativistic electron flux arising from an accreting neutron star with a magnetic field of 4.6 x 10 to the 12th G. If this explanation is indeed correct, it will provide quantitative data for neutron star formation. However, other explanations for the emission line are also proposed, including cosmic background radiation and simple statistical uncertainty. It is hoped that future observations from HEAO 1 will be able to determine the true source of the line.
