It is suggested that the H2CN(+) molecule plays a critical role in the formation of interstellar HCN and HNC. The actual detection of the H2CN(+), however, has been hampered by the possible existence of three distinct isomers, e.g., a triple-bonded carbon-nitrogen with a hydrogen bonded to both elements, and two configurations of double-bonded carbon-nitrogen, which differ in that for one configuration the hydrogens are bonded to the carbon, and for the other they are bonded to the nitrogen. Attention is given to a calculation of the energy barrier for the transition states (on the order of 30 kcal), and it is noted that the isomerically exothermic reaction should leave about 97 kcal in excess of the energy required for the isomeric transitions.
