Direct-imaging data for the quasar PKS 0837-12 are presented which clearly resolve the extremely faint structure extending a few arcsec west of the quasar into two extensions that are apparently aligned with the radio lobes. It is found that the total extent of the underlying structure is 17 + or - 1 arcsec to an estimated limiting isophote corresponding to an R magnitude of approximately 26.0/sq arcsec and that the structure is oriented at a position angle of 92 + or - 2 deg. Several faint objects are observed within about 40 arcsec of the quasar; it is suggested that these objects may be a cluster of galaxies. Spectroscopic observations of PKS 0837-12 are also reported which indicate that the quasar was 1.1 mag fainter in 1977 than in 1972, that the continuum fluxes near 4000 A decreased by about 2 mag over the same interval, and that the H-beta luminosity decreased by a factor of approximately 6 between 1972 and 1977. It is concluded that the resolved underlying structure is physically associated with the quasar and could be interpreted as either jetlike protrusions or an underlying giant elliptical galaxy.
