Techniques are outlined for analyzing the velocities of RR Lyrae variables in the neighborhood of the sun by studying radial velocities alone and by combining radial velocities with transverse velocities from proper motions and assumed distances. Mean values of the parameters R-squared, Phi-squared, and Theta-squared are determined from radial velocities alone for 79 RR Lyrae stars from Groups II a and b with previously reported velocities; mean values of the same parameters are determined from radial velocities and proper motions for 57 stars with distances of less than 2500 pc, as calculated from their apparent magnitudes. The mean values obtained for R-squared, Phi-squared, and Theta-squared, respectively, are found to be in the proportion 3:2:1. Consequences of unequal axes of the velocity ellipsoid are discussed. Application of these results to the observed distributions of RR Lyrae variables in the Galaxy is briefly considered.
