The Prognoz-2 satellite has recorded bursts from alpha particles with energies in the 600 keV - 2 Mev and 4-18 MeV ranges and lasting from a few seconds to a few minutes. The observations have been analyzed in terms of (1) the frequency and regions in which the bursts occur, (2) the frequency with which the bursts were accompanied by electron stream bursts, (3) burst duration, (4) the magnitude of alpha particle streams within the observed bursts, and (5) anisotropy. It is concluded that the observed alpha particle streams originate during the intensive oscillatory motion of the magnetosphere.
