A rigorous formulation is obtained to the problem of determining planetary surface-brightness characteristics (direct and inverse mapping problems). Brightness and illuminance integral equations are derived, and the factors responsible for the brightness field of the mapping object are analyzed. A method of calculating planetary surface-brightness characteristics is developed, in general form, and is illustrated by an example.
