A phase-sensitive acoustic sounder is found to produce a record
indicating a phase shift between a reference oscillator and the received
signal. The phase change varies after each transmitted pulse and
averages over 20 pulses to remain relatively constant. It is suggested
that the mean atmospheric temperature is associated with the phase
