The energetics of the decelerating matter in the accretion column of
X-ray pulsars is considered, in particular the Coulomb process. A two
zone model is presented to account for the continuum and cyclotron line
emission, incorporating a fan-beam radiation scheme, which appears able
to explain the observed properties.
